19th Century Meissen As was the case with most makers during the 19th century Meissen lost some of it's luster. Sevres became the place to copy and Meissen got into a bit of financial trouble. They tried to improve themselves self but not much came of it. From 1833 until 1870 Heinrich Gottlieb Kuehn was the director. He slowly made changes and discovered new colors, etc. From 1870 until 1894 Raithel was the director and under him the color choices were expanded even more and the famous pate-sur-pate technique was perfected. In 1878 Meissen started exporting their porcelain to the US which helped them financially. All this put together helped Meissen get back on their feet and regain their status of being the best.
