Sevres Sevres porcelain really started at Vincennes around 1738 and was moved to its new location in 1756. Soft paste was made exclusively until 1768 when the production of hard paste began. This was mostly due to financial reasons since soft paste created a lot more waste products than hard paste. Some of the beauty of porcelain was lost since soft paste was much nicer in terms of the actual art form than hard paste. At first asian pieces were copied as was the case all over Europe but soon they painted and made pieces after Watteau, Boucher and Fragonard. Sevres enjoyed a monopoly in France under the Kings protection until 1780 when it became impossible to continue doing so. From 1804 on Sevres only made hard paste porcelain. My favorite periods are of course anything of the 18th century and the Art Nouveau period of the beginning of the 20th century. Sevres is still in existence today.
