Pair of Biscuit Relief Scene Vases

This is a special and rare pair of vases made by Sevres in 1802. Both are made of biscuit porcelain ( unglazed porcelain ) and have a relief scene going alla round the main body including lots of figures. Looks to be Roman ladies doing differwnt things. Classical designs like this were made popular againa fter the excavation at Pompeii and Herculaneum some years earlier. Both sides of each vase has a figural mask handle in the shape of bacchus or pan or such - a man's face with horns from which fruit swags go to the center of the front and back where a bow forms the center from which another swag goes back to a handle. Arcanthus leaves to the underside of the main body to where it attached to the foot. The foot sits on a square base with a leaf garland on top of it and a "pearl" trim to the thinnest part with a leaf design to the wider decorative part above that. The very top of the vase has another decorative relief design that look like some sort of leaves with another ring of "pearls" and to the underside of the rim there is another simple leaf garland as shown. The quality of these two is stunning as one would expect from the best maker of this period. The detail of the relief is perfect and since there is no glaze to cover it up much sharper than one usually sees. I love the fact that they are "just" white because they will fit in anywhere. Both display nicely but have issues as one would except from something this old in this style. Nothing that can't be fixed or even jsut accepted as is. There are "pearls" missing from the trim as can be seen in the pictures, the underside edge of the top has thin chips out of it that at some point had been covered up but now only remnants of paint are left, one of the bases has a minor chip while the has two large ones, and one of them has been broken where the main body hits the base with a piece broken out - this has been fixed and is not obvious on display but could be done much more perfectly. And then there is the common occasional firing issue. Having said all that they are in great shape and look stunning. The relief scenes are untouched as are the handles and swags. Both are about 10.125 inches tall and about 7 inches in daimeter. I could not find another vase like it except for a larger pair copied after the Medici vase and one with a blue ground in the V& A museum that is also after that vase. Each is marked on the inside of the top 18. NOV. 0.2. or soemthing along those lines with one vase having the intials AB in script for Alexandre Brachard in 1802and the other has og as the intials or soemthing like that - not sure what that stands for. Brachard would ahve assembled the vases and sharpened the details of the relief design. I took a lot of pictures so just scroll through them as it is easier to understand the look through them than my description. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
