Figural Lidded Box

This is a superb lidded box made by one of the Paris makers in the early 19th century. Jacob Petit comes to mind with this style of decoration but it being unmarked makes it impossible to pin point the exact maker. The bottom of the piece is nicely modeled with a bacchus head to either side acting as handles. A blue ground covers the outside with some nice gold trim designs over that. The bchus heads are hand painted with lots of nice details. The lid has a large figurine to the top that is nicely modeled and hand painted. He is wearing a hat and fancy coat with shorts, shoeas and ugly socks :) The boy is holding a little pot that has a green and gold design to the outside. The lid itself has the same blue ground color and some nice gilding to it. The piece might have been a tobacco jar but could be a cookie jar or anything else you'd like. The piece is in superb condition with a small chip to grape leaf design around bacchus' head which was gilded over to hide it. Some gold wear mainly to the edge of the lid but all in all an amazing piece of French porcelain! The main body is only marked underneath with three incised lines but that is common for Paris pieces of this time period. The piece including its lid is 13.375 inches tall, 9.125 inches wide and 7 inches deep. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
