Henry Mitchell Plate #1

This is a really nice plate made by Mintons in 1870s - 1872 to be exact according to the date code. The plate was painted by Henry Mitchell after a painting by Edwin Landseer and it is a really nice piece. Normally you see them with just a dog or stag or a few dogs once in a while but I ahve never seen one with a duck hunting scene which both of my plates have. The central scene is superb and has a black dog with a duck in its mouth with some greenery below and cloud in the background. One of the nciest scenes I ahve seen by Minton ! The scene is surrounded by a tooled gold trim then a broad turquoise trim with the rim being completely reticulated and highlighted with gold details. Just a great combination and it looks stunning! The plate is of a nice size being just under 1 inch tall and 9/75 inches in diameter. It is in superb condition. Just as it left the factory. There are some circular bubble and dimple type marks all over the turquoise border but that is the way this was made and does not show when on display just at the right angle of light hitting it. It is marked underneath with impressed Mintons as well as their typical date cyphers, etc. the red T. Goode & Co Minton South Audley St. Longon retailer's mark, a purple 22 and a pattern number G739 over 4 as shown. Artist signed H.M. in the bottom of the greenery in the scene as shown. These plates are really hard to find and I have never seen this scene before! Please email me for more information or other pictures.

About Henry Mitchell : He was born in England in 1824 and worked at Minton between 1860 and 1879 and specialized in copies of Edwin Landseer animal painting and landscapes.
