Sharkskin Case St. Cloud Knives & Forks

This is a rare case for a set of knives and forks made in France in the early 18th century. These so called shagreen (fish skin, probably shark) cases boxes are rather hard to find, It is tall and slender, lined with green velvet and would be for a full set of St. Cloud porcelain handles knives and forks. The case displays nicely and is a rare survivor but not perfect. The lid does not close easily all the way in order to lock it probably because the hinges had some of the original screws replaced and it was not a perfect fit anymore. I do not have the original key either but one might be able to find one that works. No idea. The fish skin on the outside is in good shape except for a little bit of damage to the edges and a reglued tearalong the left back side as shown. It has a ring on top to be able to hold it when locked. The underside is wood. The hinges and the hardware around the lock are beautifully done with a ton of detail as shown. The insidevelvet has faded and is worn and torn in places now. Still looks great and works very well with the knives and forks I own. I don't have a perfect set for 6 but I have a set of five and another set that matches perfectly so it would look perfect. The piece is 13.25 inches tall, 5.5 inches wide and 4.75 inches deep.
