Gold Dots Design Chocolate Cup & Saucer

This is a rare large double handle chocolate cup and saucer made by Caughley in the 18th century. Both pieces are decorated with a gold dot design also known as the polka dot pattern as well as a nice gold trim to the inside rim quite typical for this maker. The center has a little flower to it. A gorgeous set and not something you see often from this maker especially in this pattern. The set displays perfectly with the cup having the tiniest of wear to the gilding with the saucer only having a tiny bit more but sadly there is a flaw to the center of the saucer which is hard to spot. A star hairline has developed in the center and goes to the fot ring as show. A bit of the glaze in the center of that has flaked on the top side and it is more visible from the udnerside as shown. It is stable and does not affect the piece when on display! Neither piece is marked but that is not unusual. The cup is 3.125 inches tall and 3.875 inches in diameter. The handles stick out 0.75 inches on either side. The saucer is 1.875 inches high and has a diameter of 6.125 inches. Very deep and likely designed to pour the hot chocolate into the saucer to cool it more quickly so one could drink it faster. In those days chocolate was almost always in this form rather than a chocolate bar. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
