Battersea Plaque of General Gates

This is a rare and historical piece of Battersea enamel likely made in the Bilston area of Souther Staffordshire in England . It is a little plaque (and was possibly once a cover for a snuff box) with a portrait of Major General Horation Gates in his Continetntal Army uniform . The plaque dates to the Revolutionary War period somewhere around 1775. His quick history is that he was born in England in 1728 and went to the United States as a military man - fought in the Civil War with the rebels and won the Battle Of Saratoga after which he retired. He was later appointed Brigadier General and Adjutant General of the Continental Army under George Washington and died in about 1806. He is considered to be the first Adjutant General of the US Army. For more in depth info just Google him. The plaque is very well done with lots of nice detail and has his name and title to the top part as shown. I could only find one other which was hand painted over with color and has a whole lot of his history in the description as well: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/11672398_revolutionary-war-era-battersea-box-cover . The piece is likely copper covered in white enamel or porcelain and the design is printed as is common. It was mounted in a little frame which makes it easier to display and looks nice. The plaque is in good condition with some of the normal issues like tiny cracks and chips but better than the other example I found and really display very well. The frame is not perfect either but works. Could always be redone in a nicer frame. The plaque is about 2 inches tall and 1.375 inches wide. The frame is 4 inches wide and 4.5 inches tall and about 0.625 inches thick. It is not marked as far as I can tell and they usually were nor marked either. A nice piece of Amercian history from an important period. A little Americana and a nice chance to add something special and from the period to your collection!
