Wedgwood Basalt Baby Figurine

This is a rare baby figurine made from basalt by Wedgwood around 1773. These were reproduced from casts, probably by Mrs. Landre after the originals by Duquesnoy ( Il Fiammingo ). There is some confusion because these have been referred to as figures of Somnus (the sleeper), but that name refers to a different figure. This little guy isn't really sleeping either but rather lying down and pointing at something with his left hand while holding a ball in his right hand. There is a cloth underneath him and the base has a nice design to it. Really a superbly made figurine! It is in perfect condition. The piece is marked underneath with the impressed WEDGWOOD mark and it has a sticker from a prominent collection on it as well. Issod is their name and they deal in Wedgwood and have a large collection. I met them recently and couldn't live without this piece :) They in turn bought this piece from a dealer in England 40 years ago. The piece is 2.25 inches tall, 5.125 inches wide and 3.25 inches deep (including the pointing hand). Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $2249
