Mochaware Cup & Saucer

This is a superb Creamware cup and saucer either made in the Staffordshire region of England or by Creil et Montereau of France. I have seen these described as either and am not sure. Definitely an early 19th century set! Made of a creamware type material and often called mochaware because of the dendritic design to it. The paste has a creamy color to it hence its name and the outside of the cup and underside of the saucer have a darker off white ground color to them with the black tree or seaweed looking design to it and a black trim to the edges. Each unique dendritic pattern is created by touching or dripping an acidic tea solution onto the wet slip. The designs are called mochaware because they resemble the patterns found in moss agate. It's a very unique design and one rarely finds it on a cup and saucer set! The set is in great condition. A manufacturing flaw to the underside edge of the saucer where the darker ground color missed a spot, two lines to the inside paste of the cup - indented into the paste - this is not a crack or hairline!! One are of the cup design that has a shadow to it as if the liquid bled a bit instead of growing into the tree design. All from when it was made. It's a great looking set! Neither piece is marked but that is normal for this type of item during this period. An old auction label at the bottom of the cup as shown. The cup is 2.5 inches tall and has a diameter of 2.25 inches and the saucer is 1.125 inches tall and has a diameter of 4.75 inches. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
