Rosenthal Lucifer Figurine

This is a superb figurine made by Rosenthal during the mid 20th century right around the time it was first designed. I cannot find this exact mark oddly enough but assume it is the same as the one for 1959 with a line to either side to Germany though here one is underneath and one to thr side. It is marked with the number 1958 underneath so that might be the year it was amde as well. There are three figurines to this set anhd they were designed between 1951 and 1954, This one here is one of the ahrder to find modeles especially with the fingers intact! One of the most powerful models I know especially for a white figurine! It is one of those figures that just speaks to you - hard to describe but it is an amazingly modeled piece with lots of movement and detail. Also happens to be one of my wife's favorite pieces. The figure is of the angel Lucifer ( Der Engel Luzifer ) modeled by Waldemar Fritsch which depicts the dancer Harald Kreutzberg in the dance " Night Song " dancing to the music of Johannes Brahms . Absolutely stunning piece and in perfect condition which is really hard to find! The piece has the green Rosenthal mark underneath as well as the numnber 1958 and 4 and the designer's name impressed as shown. The figurine is 16.25 inches tall, about 8.5 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Please email me for more information or photos.

A bit more on the dancer who inspired this piece: Harald Kreutzberg (1902-1968) was the most famous male representative of the German dance in the 20th century and was regarded as the "best dancer since Nijinsky". From 1923 he appeared at the Hannover opera house as a solo dancer with his own choreography. In 1926 he toured successfully through the United States with the dancer Yvonne Georgi, where he met in 1934 the dancer Ruth Page with whom he toured through Hawaï, Japan, Shanghai and Wladiwostok. In 1941 he was appointed to leader of the State Academy for dance in Vienna. After many triumphs as a dancer and dance teacher all over the world he received in 1952 the German Dance prize for the "life's work of the greatest German dancer since 25 years". In 1968 Kreutzberg died at the age of 66 in Bern, Switzeland.
