Popow Scenic Mug

This is a superb mug made by Popoff around 1820. Alexander Popoff founded the factory near Moscow in the early 19th century. The products were highly sought after and from 1810 until 1830 they produced the best quality wares. The factory was closed in 1872. The front has a large scene that is handpainted with great detail and color. There are clouds in the sky, a castle in the background (one might be able to find out which one), two houses in the center with a road going towards them that two people are walking on. Nice rocks and greenery all around. The scene is surrounded with a gold trim and to either side there is a nice floral arrangement that is quite typical of Popov. Nice handle shape finishes this superb mug. It is in great condition as well except for a lot of wear to the gold trim on the handle and top & bottom rim. It was definitely loved and used and the wear doesn't take away from the piece at all. The mug is marked underneath with the underglaze Popow mark, a red 49 and an impressed 23. It is 3.75 inches tall and just under 3.5 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
