Chinese Musician Figurine #3

This is a figurine of a musician playing the serpent made by Nymphenburg in the early 20th century. Lavish parties of the Rococo high society were often accompanied by the commanding bass tone of the serpent. The figure comes from a series of 17 or 18 figurines I think - this being one of the harder to find pieces especially in perfect condition. In this case the instrument ends over his head but I ahve the other piece where it goes under his arm as well. I think I ahve 8 of the figures from this set now and it's one of my favorite! They all sit on a shelf in my office :) Originally they were off course modelled by Bustelli in the 18th century. This is the blanc de chine version but this also comes in a painted version though one rarely ever sees it. The figure has the monk looking young gentleman dressed in a flowing top and pants blowing into the instrument while holding it with his right hand and under his left arm to over his head. He is standing on a typical base. A really fun piece that is stunning and elegant looking. This piece is amazingly modeled and one can see why Bustelli is still considered the greatest modeler of all time. The figurine is 5.625 inches tall, 2 inches wide and 3.125 inches deep. It is in perfect condition! The figurine is marked with the impressed shield mark to the top side of the base and underneath as well as the impressed numbers 489 over 3.
