Nodder Figurine

This is a fun figurine made by Meissen in the mid 20th century - 1950 to be exact I believe. Affectionately known in German as Wackelpagode (wobbling Pagoda) here they are simply known as nodders. Like the first bobble head dolls :) I think they were first made in China to detect earthquakes, etc. since they would wobble at the slightest thing. The figure was first modeled by Johann Joachim Kaendler in the mid 1740s and is of a female Buddha (didn't know there was such a thing!). The figure depicts a sitting, smiling, voluptuous lady with her hair combed back into a bun/braiShe is wearing a wide robe hand painted with so called Indian flowers in polychrome and sitting cross-legged, arms straight in front of her. Moveable head, tongue and hands. It is an amazing figurine! On a side note - this model was the first piece I ever sold when I was still in college getting my chemistry degree. My father asked me to sell some of his collection for him and this was the first piece he chose. It was so much fun to do that I kept going afterwards while also doing chemistry. Fun times! The figure displays superbly and has no chips, etc. BUT the mechanisms for both the hands and head/tongue have been redone. There is a small chip to the tip of the tongue. Some minor firing black spots to the hands. So nothing major in terms of the porcelain but it is marked as a fourth choice so wwas only sold to workers at the factory. Having said that they often painted them in their specialty and are of very good quality and a bit different from regular models. Here we ahve a flesh colored ground color to the robe she is wearing while it is usually plain white. A nice addition! The figure is marked in the back just above the base with the under glaze crossed swords mark with four cut lines to it, another blue crossed swords mark to the underside base (a bit hard to see) and the usual incised and impressed numbers and marks including the model number and year mark as shown. The piece is 7.25 inches tall (so not the smallest version!) , 7.25 inches wide and 7 inches deep. One of the most fun pieces Meissen ever made! Please email me for more information or other pictures.
