Puce Ground Harbor Scene Cup & Saucer

This is an amazing and very early puce or purple (sometimes called Blackberry ) ground cup and saucer made by Meissen in about 1740. Both pieces are hand painted with superb harbor / merchant type scenes as well as this superb mottled purple ground color. The saucer has the entire well painted with a large scene including buildings, ships and people surrounded by a fancy black and gold trim with a touch of what I believe is the famous Boettger luster color in the open areas of the trim on the sides. Fancy gold trim to the edge and puce ground color to the underside rim with a gold line along the outside of the foot. The cup has a really nice scene to the front and back each of which is surrounded by a nicely shaped gold trim, same fancy trim as the saucer to the inside rim, gold trim along the foot ring, gilded nicely shaped handle and another super scene to the bottom inside surrounded by a double red line trim. The set is stunning for sure! The set is in as good a condition as one could hope for with some very minor wear to the gilding and a single spots of wear to the scene of the saucer - on top of the barrel. The only thing worth noting is that the purple ground on the two pieces is not an exact match but they are definitely a set and that color was notorious for being difficult to control and a small temperature change gave it a slightly diffferent hue. The cup is 1.875 inches tall and has a diameter of 3.125 inches. The saucer 1.125 inches tall and has a diameter of 5.25 inches. Each piece is marked with the under glaze blue crossed swords mark from this period underneath as shown and both have a gold 55 mark as well as an impressed number.
