Woodcut Flowers & Shaded Insects Serving Dish

This is a really cool and early serving dish made by Meissen in about 1735. The piece is hand painted with a superb large double flower in the center surrounded by three bugs and a smaller single flower and another two superb single flwoers along the rim plus four more bugs and a tiny leaf and flower likely to hide a firing flaw. The flowers and bugs are in the woodcut style and still before 1740 since the piece has no impressed number yet. Tthe best part of all the decoration is that if you look closely all the bugs have little shadows to them. As if they were not special enough on their own the shadows under them are amazing! This style of painting is often attributed to Klinger as a painter which is probably more of a myth since as far as I know only one signed piece is known by him and it was not shaded. Either way the bugs and flowers are of a very nice quality and the shade makes them seem lifelike on the white background. The edge of the plate has the usual brown trim to it. The plate is in superb condition with two small restorations to the edge that are invisible! There is a bit of wear from use and age which is normal and can be seen in my pictures. Nothing that takes away from this fun piece! The platter is 2.375 inches tall and 13.75 inches in diameter. The piece is marked with the under glaze blue crossed swords mark underneath as shown.
