Mid 18thC Blue Onion Plate

This is a a rare and early plate made by Meissen during the mid 18th century. One does not see these early blue onion design plates very much anymore and they are superb. Still hand painted and with a different blue than later examples so it really is a stunning decoration that explains which it still is so popular even today! . The design is all done in under glaze blue so it holds up extremely well unlike painted examples. This and the strawflower design are the two that still are around everywhere today just not the early pieces sadly. The plate is in great condition with some minor stacking wear to the glaze which is only obvious when you look for it and hold it at the right angle to the light. There is also an extra blob of porcelain on the rim as shown which is a sure indicator that this is an early piece! The blue has sunks into the porcelain a bit which you can feel which is something you see on these early pieces. It's a great looking piece and rare survivor! Blue and white peices were meant for use much more than painted examples so they were broken much more often! Marked with the straight blue crossed swords underneath with a dot between the bottom ends as well as the blue painters mark and an impressed number as shown. The plate is 1.5 inches tall and has a diameter of 9.25 inches. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
