Marieberg Pot de Creme

This is a lidded cup / pot au jus / pot de creme / hot chocolate / custard cup made in Sweden by Marieberg in the 18th century. The factory in Marieberg was founded in 1758 by Johan Ludvig Eberhard Ehrenreich, Court dentist to Frederick I. The location was at the Marieberg estate on the island of Kungsholmen in Stockholm. In 1766 until his departure in 1769, the Frenchman Pierre Berthevin introduced a soft-paste porcelain as well as the style of Mennecy porcelain where he worked previously. The factory specialised in these spirally fluted lidded cups. In the begining they looked very much like Mennedy examples but during the period between 1770 and 1783 Henrik Sten from the rival Rorstrand factory was in charge and introduced a more chalky body and after 1777 a hard paste body was achieved. The cup here dates from the period under the directorship of Sten. This cute lidded cup hstill has the fluted body but the paste and decoration is already their own. Nicely hand painted with flowers as well as little bugs and a nice gold trim. Fruit finial with its leaves to the lid. The main body is marked underneath with their three crown mark over a fleur de lis looking design. I wished it was a first period peice since it would have had my initials MB under it but I'll take this one for now. A very rare find and my first by this maker. The cup with the lid in place is 3.25 inches tall and 2.25 inches in diameter. The set is in superb condition with a tiny gilded over chip to the lid edge and a painted over firing flaw to the inside of the cup as shown. As nice as they come from this maker!
