Faux Micromosaic Bird Scene Teapot

This is an amazing teapot made by KPM in the early 19th century about 1805. It has a nice shape to it typical of the Empire period and is hand painted with a superb design of a bird scene in the micro mosaic style or en mosaique surrounded by a nice gold trim with raised designs to it. The faux micromosaic designs are just amazing - off course the originals originated in ancient Rome but became popular again in the early 19th century because of the Grand Tour trips across Europe and the souvenirs that came with it. KPM was one of the few makers that translated these designs onto porcelain and it became a very desirable piece to own. They are quite rare these days. The rest of the tea pot has a nice leaf garland on pink ground around the top as well as the lid, a pink ground to the foot and top of spout and some nice gilding with a bit of raised detail to it. The handle in the shape of a swan is typical of this perod and often associated with these micromasaic pieces. It has a nice color to it and lots of gold highlights. The pot is 6.75 inches tall, 6 inches from handle to spout and 4.125 inches in diameter. It is marked underneath with the under glaze blue scepter mark with a blue line above it which is probably a painter's mark of the period, a red anchor which is also an artist's mark as well as an impressed number that is hard to make out. The piece is in superb condition with the finial having sagged a bit during firing probably because it is hollow due to the vent hole in the center, there is a tiny black firing spot near the handle and a large on on the handle from the making. One stray small gold spot on one side. All in all as nice as you can hope for. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
