17thC Arita Kakiemon Hexagonal Bowl #1

This is a really superb hexagonal bowl dish made in Japan in the late 17th century. Likely from the Arita area so they are today known as Arita ware or Hizen ware though this is used more for blue and white pieces. The wares with added color are known as Imari , with Kakiemon being a sub group of that. Kutani wares also come from this area but are different yet again. This little dish is a really nice early piece dating around 1680 so before European porcelain was around which is what I usually collect. If you look at the design you can see that the top German maker and others copied quite a few of them onto their wares in the 18th century. The bowl is hand painted in the Kakiemon style with an early phoenix bird / ho-ho bird in red and gold on three of the outside panels. In between are panels of different variations of Kakiemon flowers. The inside has two different designs to it in the same amazing colors and a single blossom to the very bottom. One of the designs is a flowering chrysanthemum branch I believe and the other some sort of pine tree growing on some rocks. Brown trim to the top edge. What you don't see easily is an attention to detail that is just incredible. There is a relief design to the porcelain paste around the top rim of clouds and some sort of other design I cannot quit make out. I tried to show this in some pictures but it's hard to see. A really incredible little bowl that looks amazing and is older than all my other things. And to top it all of it is in amazing condition with just two flea bites to the top edge. Invisible when on display so it looks absolutely perfect on display. The paste has a really nice white color to it. This dish just screams quality - it is the perfect piece to show off both the quality of the porcelain and the decoration. The bowl is 2.25 inch tall and about 4.375 inches at the widest point. It is unmarked which is normal. I do have a second bowl if anyone is interested in a very rare pair. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
