Hugo Lonitz Mirror

This is a superb majolica mirror frame made by Hugo Lonitz in the late 19th century. It is superbly modeled iIn the Renaissance style with winged angels to the side, a putto to the top and the lower section with a shell in the center likely for holy water with some fancy scrollwork and leaf garlands filling in the rest of the space. Hugo Lonitz was a German majolica maker that employed as many as 40 people during its peak and was located in Neuhaldensleben near Magdeburg in Prussia . He is best known for his naturalistic majolica pieces with his inspiration coming from the Black Forest carvings popular in Europe during this time. He exhibited at several of the 19th century world exhibitions including the 1876 International Exhibition in Philadelphia . The mirror was originally designed to be a table mirror and are thus often damaged but in this case it was converted to a hanging mirror and is in amazing condition with three or four very minor glaze chips and no real damage. The backside where the mirror is has been worked on likely to replace the mirror though this one is also older with some flaws to the reflective surface as shown. The mirror is bevelled. There used to be a stand attached to the wooden back cover of the mirror which is gone. All in all an amazing piece in amazing condition. The piece is about 19 inches tall, 14 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep. It is marked with the impressed double fish mark in an oval with the model number 1628 .
