Gotha Sepia Scene Single Cup

This is a fun single cup made by Gotha in the very early 19th century. Gotha is probably the best of the Thuringia makers in terms of quality of the paste and painting. They existed from 1757 until 1937 in one form or another. The cup is hand painted with a scene in sepia colors typical for this maker. It shows a small cabin with a single person in front of it in a landscape surrounding. A bit of gold trim to the edges and nicely shaped handle in the classicism style. There is some writing under the scene: Wohnung des Democritus auf dem Weissenstein. It does not make much sense to me but the translation is - home of Democritus on top of the Weissenstein. The Weissenstein is a mountain of the Jura, located north of Solothurn in the Swiss canton of Solothurn. Democritus was a Greek philosopher. I doubt he ever made it to Switzerland let alone had a home there so I am a bit confused. The cup is in great condition with some minor wear to the gilding. The piece is marked underneath with the underglaze blue script G. mark as shown. The cup is 2.25 inches tall and 2.25 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or photos.

Price is $199
