Thomas Baxter Vase

This is a really special vase made in England in the early 19th century. Not sure if this piece was made at Worcester or at Coalport as I could not find this shape anywhere. What makes it a lot more exciting however is that the scene seems to have been painted by the famous Thomas Baxter . I suspected as much but a high end dealer in London confirmed it. The vase is nicely modeled with two fancy fully gilded handles holding a ring and is hand painted with some fancy gilding on white ground to the neck part. The main body has an uneven blue ground with lots of fancy gilding to it that looks amazing and the base has a cobalt blue ring around the foot with a bit more fancy gilding towards its top. The best part however is the scene to the front. A superbly hand painted landscape with a cherub in the center holding an arrow in one hand and a bow in the other. It is lying on a pink cloth with a dog next to him that appeas to give him kisses. A couple of roses to either side. The quality of the scene is the best of the best and the facial features are definitely those of Baxter. The bottom right corner appears to ahve some sort of initials or signature but it might just be part of the painting. The vase is about 10.625 inches tall, 5 inches wide and 4.75 inches deep. Not visibly marked but the restoration of the base could hide a mark. And with that the exciting part is over and we'll get to the bummer part of the description. While the piece displays nciely it has been worked on big time and I suspect much of it unnecessarily. I'll try my best but this one is rough. I know one handle seems to have had a clean break and was restored and the base seems to ahve been badly damaged and restored. Almost the entire piece except for the neck was regilded and the entire piece a clear over spray over that which has yellowed from age. I removed some of that to show the white underneath. The main body shows no signs of restoration on the inside so I am sure that is fine. The gilding on the blue ground - the urn with the birds are original but I think much of that unrefined gold scroll work was added later embellish it. New hardware to hold teh base in place. So while it displays nicely I think this could use a touch of a good restorer to bring it back to it's original state with nice and less gilding. The scene still easily makes this worth owning!
