Scenic Enamel Box w/ Portrait

This is a nice larger box made in England - probably in the South Staffordshire region - in the late 18th century. Probably in the Bilston area or possibly Birmingham or even London but definitely English from the 1700s. They are famous for their Battersea enamel boxes, etc. Not sure if this would be considered a patch box or tabatiere / snuff / pill box but either way it is a fun piece! Larger than many one sees. The box is decorated on the outside lid with a superb hand painted Watteau style scene to the top including a couple in a landscape surrounding with some sheep. A very well done scene! The sides of the box each have flowers to them - a nice floral arrangement to the front and back with smaller single flowers to the sides. The udnerside has a little flwoer to it as well. My favorite part however is the portrait of a lady to the inside lid. it is very nicely painted with the lady wearing a pink top with a white lace blouse and a large hat with a bit of a landscape surrounding in the background. The metal mounts are copper I believe though heavily tarnished from age which is the norm.. The box is in great condition - it displays perfectly but has some minimal damage to the corners and an area on the back side where the enamel must have been lost which was painted over white to hide it well. I think one of the corners was worked on as well but it is hard to tell. General wear on the bottom from age. Either way in better condition than most one comes across and off a nice size with some really nice decorations to it. The lid closes well and stays shut. All in all a great example! The box is 1.5 inches tall, just under 3.5 inches wide and 2.625 inches deep. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
