Oxford Scenic Cup & Saucer

This is a really nice cup and saucer made by Derby in the very early 19th century around 1805. Both pieces have a superb hand painted scene to them as well as some nice gilding. Interesting handle shape to the cup with a bit of gold trim to that as well. The scenes are of very good quality but I am not good enough to possibly identify a painter for them so I'll leave that up to the experts. The scenes are interesting especially the one on the saucer which is labeled Oxford - it has a nice landscape to it with people and a boat as well as a tree but the best part is in the background - it is the Magdalen College including the bridge. The college is part of the famous and superb Oxford University system. Never seen a scene like it before and it is fun to see the college and what the environment looked like over 200 years ago. A real treat! The cup has a scene of Keswick Lake on it which is a bit North of Oxford. Nice to see English scenes on their cup and saucer! Both are marked with the name of the scene and the typical D under crossed batons mark with a crown over it in the unusual black color normally used for their plaques. Never seen that on a cup and saucer before. Both pieces also have a red 21 on the udnerside for the gilder (and later flower painter) James Hill . He started at Derby around 1803 and wroked there for quite a while (30 years or so). The set is in terrific condition for its age with some minor wear - a bit to the high points of the scene on the saucer and to one side of the gilding on the cup as shown. The set displays perfectly! The saucer is 1.625 inches tall (so rather deep) and 5.625 inches in diameter. The cup is 2.5 inches tall and 2.625 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or other pictures.
