Chlesea Derby Small Bird Scene Tankard

This is a really interesting small ale tankard or hot cider cup. It was probably made during the Chelsea Derby period with the foot ring being ground down but the paste has no moons at all so might be Derby as well. It would date to around 1770.The piece is nicely shaped with the typical handle shape. Browinish trim to the top edge but the best part are the two hand painted bird scenes to the sides. One has two birds of paradise in a landscape scene with some greenery and even roses. The other is a bit simpler having a single bird sitting on a nice branch. I have never seen this type of decoration so it might have been decorated in London by Derby painters. Definitely a nice and unusual example! Amazingly the mug is in as really nice condition with just a touch of wear much more visible in the enlarged pictures than the actual piece. A chip to the foot ring that looks to be original to it from when it was made. It displays superbly! The piece is not marked but that is normal. It is 3.75 inches tall and 2.875 inches in diameter. Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $599
