18thC Figurine

This is a superb figurine made by Royal Copenhagen in their early years around 1780. The paste is grey and has many issues including a base that is more like a seesaw :) as well as black spots and some sort of flaw on top of the base. The figurine is very well known and you can find the modern version fairly easily but this original version is very rare! It is of a cherub riding a lion - possibly cupid / amor since he has an arrow quiver on his back. The piece is superbly modelled and left in the white which was more valued than painted pieces back then and very hard to achieve this level of perfection in white. The piece is still made with the local Kaolin hence it not being as white as the pieces from a bit later when they used foreign Kaolin. The figure is in great condition but one wing (his left one looking from the back) has been restored and is a bit whiter in appearance though it was done well. His right foot has the tip restored but all in all it is in superb display condition. An amazing and rare example of early Copenhagen! The bottom is marked with an incised cross as well as an incised W which is a known mark for a modeller of this period. The piece is 5.25 inches tall, 2.875 inches wide and 6.5 inches long.
