Copeland Paul & Virginia Figurine

This is a superb early Parian figure made by Copeland in the mid 19th century. It is called Paul and Viriginia and was modeled by Cumberworth around 1846 which makes it a very early parian figurine by them. The couple is seated on some rocks with their feet bare, an axe by his right foot, some corn by her left foot with her holding a nest of baby birds in her hand. He has a straw hat hanging off his nack on his back and there is a ncei plant behind him. A superbly modeled piece that is just stunning. Nice size, too - being just under 12 inches tall, 11.25 inches wide and 6 inches deep. It is marked with the impressed COPELAND mark to the back edge of the base as shown. A fairly haevy piece due to its size. Amazingly in great condition with just the index finger of her right hand missing the front part otherwise perfect. The piece is based on a romance novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre about the love of two poor fatherless kids raised on a tropical island.
