Betjemann's Book Slide

This is a book slide made by Betjemann's in England around the mid to late 19th century. It used to have a self closing mechanism which is missing some sort of rope like part as far as I can tell but the wheels are there, etc. Two hinged flaps - one on either side - are mounted with brass rope molding around the edge and a porcelain plaque with a handpainted angel scene on each which appear to be of French origin. Brass manufacturer's plate as well as patent number 7798 plate and in the center what appears to be the name and address of its original owner. Victorian era luxury items like this combined the newest inventions with the best artistic trends of the period to make some really fun items like this! The piece is in great condition with some wear from use but nothing that makes you cringe by any means :) There is one dent on the top edge of the black laquered base. The screw on the bottom of the left side hinge seem to be newish. The piece is 15.5 inches long, 6.5 inches deep and 7.5 inches tall when open. It can be extended to 24 inches. Looks like the velvet underside used to be more reddish in color but has faded over time. Please email me for more information or other pictures.

Price is $599
