Vienna Cupid Scene Plate #1

This is a plate made by one of the many factories copying the Royal Vienna beehive / shield mark in the 19th or early 20th century. The center is hand painted with a signed scene of a Cupid and Cephisa to it. The story goes that Cephisa wants to cut the wings of Love (cupid) while the guy standing is Montesquieu who stops her from doing so. It is after a painting after Kaufmann's Céphise et l'Amour . The scene is of a nice quality and signed in gold Kaufmann near the foot of the lady. The well of the plate has a nice gold trim with raised designs to it and the rim has a nice blue ground with fancy gilding to it including some raised parts. Typical for plates in this style. These types of plates are very elegant and decorative which is why they are so popular. The plate is in great condition with some very minor wear to the gilding mainly on the very edge. The plate center has sagged a bit during the firing which they tried to correct but it still does not sit flat on the surface. It displays perfectly! The piece is 9.5 inches in diameter and 1.125 inches tall so a very nice size. It is marked underneath with the blue shield / beehive mark with Austria under it as well as the name of the scene in black Cupido und Cephisa as shown.
